The Volkswagen Taigun has crossed the 1 lakh domestic sales milestone in India, marking an important achievement for the German carmaker's midsize SUV. Launched in September 2021, the Taigun has built its presence in the competitive Indian SUV market with its turbo-petrol engines, driving dynamics, safety package and European-inspired styling.
According to sales data reported on October 28, 2026, the Taigun had recorded 99,095 domestic wholesale units by the end of September 2026. The remaining 905 units needed to reach the milestone were sold during the first half of October.
Volkswagen has also exported 52,751 units of the SUV cars, taking its combined domestic and export sales to 1,51,846 units since launch. The achievement comes shortly after the updated Taigun was introduced in April 2026 with revised styling, additional features and a new automatic gearbox for the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
The Taigun has remained an important model in Volkswagen India's passenger vehicle portfolio. Its domestic sales peaked in FY2023, when the SUV recorded 21,736 units, according to reported wholesale figures.
Sales subsequently moderated as competition in the midsize SUV segment intensified. The SUV recorded 20,485 domestic units in FY2024 and 19,910 units in FY2025, followed by 12,912 units in FY2026.
However, the updated model appears to have helped improve recent performance. During the first six months of FY2027, covering April to September 2026, the Taigun recorded 7,163 units, representing a 4% year-on-year increase compared with 6,891 units during the corresponding period a year earlier.
These figures indicate that the 2026 update has supported sales, although the SUV continues to compete against several established models in a crowded segment.
Apart from domestic demand, exports have contributed significantly to the Taigun's overall sales. Volkswagen has exported 52,751 units of the SUV since its introduction, according to the latest reported figures.
Exports reached their highest annual level in FY2025, with 14,903 units shipped to overseas markets. The export contribution demonstrates the importance of India's manufacturing operations within Volkswagen's broader regional strategy.
Combined domestic and export sales of 1,51,846 units underline the Taigun's role as both an Indian-market SUV and an export-oriented product.

Volkswagen introduced the updated Taigun in April 2026, bringing several changes intended to improve the SUV's appeal.
The facelift features revised front and rear styling, updated lighting elements, fresh alloy wheel designs and new colour options. The cabin has also received updates, while additional equipment enhances the overall package.
One of the key mechanical changes is the introduction of an eight-speed automatic transmission with the 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine. This replaces the earlier automatic gearbox arrangement for that engine and is intended to deliver smoother shifts.
The updated Taigun continues to offer two turbo-petrol engine options, catering to buyers seeking a balance between everyday usability and stronger performance.
The Taigun is available with a 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine and a more powerful 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine.
The 1.0-litre engine produces approximately 115hp, while the 1.5-litre version delivers around 150hp. Transmission choices vary by engine and variant, with manual and automatic options available across the lineup.
The SUV is positioned towards buyers who prioritise driving engagement, highway performance and a premium cabin experience.
The updated Volkswagen Taigun is priced from approximately ₹11 lakh to ₹19.47 lakh, ex-showroom, depending on the variant and powertrain.
The range includes multiple trims, allowing customers to choose between a more accessible entry-level version and higher-spec models with additional equipment and the more powerful engine.
The GT variants are particularly relevant for buyers seeking stronger performance. The final on-road price varies by location, insurance, registration charges and selected options.
The Volkswagen Taigun competes in one of India's most competitive passenger vehicle categories. Its rivals include the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Honda Elevate.
These competitors offer different combinations of powertrains, cabin space, features, fuel efficiency and pricing. Some also provide diesel or hybrid options, while the Taigun's Indian lineup focuses on turbo-petrol engines.
Volkswagen's strengths include its driving characteristics, turbocharged performance and safety-focused equipment. However, competition from newer models and feature-rich alternatives continues to put pressure on sales.
Crossing 1 lakh domestic sales is an important achievement for the Taigun, especially given the number of established brands competing in the midsize SUV segment.
The 2026 update has brought fresh styling, additional features and a revised automatic transmission option. The recent 4% year-on-year growth in the first half of FY2027 suggests that the refreshed model is helping sustain customer interest.
Going forward, the Taigun's performance will depend on how effectively Volkswagen balances pricing, equipment, ownership costs and product updates against its rivals. Continued export demand will also remain important to the model's overall contribution.
The Volkswagen Taigun has crossed 1 lakh domestic sales in India, with the milestone reached in October 2026 after its September 2021 launch. Including exports, cumulative sales have reached 1,51,846 units.
The SUV's updated 2026 version brings revised styling, more features and an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the 1.0-litre TSI engine. Although competition remains intense, the latest sales growth suggests that the Taigun continues to hold a place in Volkswagen India's portfolio.
Its future performance will depend on customer response to the facelift, competitive pricing and the brand's ability to maintain its appeal in India's rapidly evolving midsize SUV market.
